16. Beautiful Creatures

First off, I must say that the book covers for the entire series are lovely! There is a cohesiveness to the set, because they all contain a black, curling vine motif. There's simply something alluring about them. Sadly, I wasn't nearly as excited about the contents of the first novel. I just got bored with it.

I will admit, I was inspired to read Beautiful Creatures after I watched the movie. As such, I already had preconceived notions of the characters and plotline. There were obviously discrepancies between my expectations and the actual book. The book characters fell short of my imagination (and the movie). Their whole romance seemed shallow, and I just didn’t feel much attachment to them. There was nothing glaringly wrong with the characters or the plot, but there was nothing extraordinary to grab my attention either. I just found the whole novel to be dull. The mystical aspect of the story didn’t manage to capture my attention, and I didn’t get excited by the climax. That being said, I wouldn’t call the novel terrible, either. It may be perfectly suited to other people who prefer stories with a narrower focus and slower pace. The writer is more than capable of fashioning a decent story with decent characters. It was just not my cup of tea.
